Ivy Pool Club
Summer in Sydney. The Ivy Pool Club at George St is either your ideal summer drinking locale or your idea of hell, depending on who you are, how much money you have and how comfortable you are in swimwear. It is, without a doubt, one of the most stylish spots to drink a cocktail and there's no denying it. The centrepiece is the turquoise pool that glitters during the day with private cabanas filled with yellow Thonet chairs and big fat cusions framing it. There are big lounges to recline on or you can take a seat on the little concrete island under a big yellow beach umbrella. Otherwise, prop up the bar and drink some of head bartender Mikey Enright's cocktails – a seasonal list with plenty of poolside fun.
Of course, if you want some privacy or simply to dance around in your togs, there's always the Ivy Changeroom downstairs - the club that's as much a shower fantasy (none of the doors locks properly, each can house at least five people and every room has a mirror ball and shower head) as it is a bar.
Getting into the Ivy Pool Club is relatively easy if you're eight feet tall and built like Twiggy. For all you regular folk, you'll need a loyalty card and they're rarer than hen's teeth. In fact, they've actually stopped releasing them for the year. If all else fails, head up to Italian restaurant Uccello that borders the club and press your nose up against the glass to watch the beautiful people frolic.
