Art Gallery of NSW: Packing Room Prize

Sydney artist Paul Jackson has been awarded the Packing Room Prize in conjunction with the 2009 Archibald Prize for his portrait of Flacco, the comic creation of stage and film actor Paul Livingston.

A verbal gymnast with a wondrously absurd, sorrowful take on life, Flacco is known and loved for his appearances on television shows including Good News Week and two Flacco and the Sandman specials for the Ten Network, and The Big Gig and Daas Kapital for the ABC.

From 1998 – 2001, Livingston produced a regular cartoon for The Australian Magazine called The Flacco Files, which later appeared as a book.

The Packing Room prize gives the Art Gallery of NSW staff who receive the entries for Archibald the chance to vote for their favourite Archibald portrait.

Najbardziej prestiżową nagrodą australijską w dziedzinie malarstwa jest Archibald Prize. Nagroda przyznawana jest za portret znanych osobistości życia politycznego, społecznego, sportowego oraz kulturalnego i cieszy się ogromnym zainteresowaniem tutejszych mediów. Ma rangę australijskiego Oskara w dziedzinie sztuk plasycznych. W tym roku nadesłano 708 prac. Dzis w południe po raz 88. w Art Gallery of New South Wales ogłoszono zwycięzcę spośród 39 finalistów. Archibald Prize 2009 i czek na $50 000 otrzymał Guy Maestri za portret Geofreya Gurrumulul Yunupingu, aborygenskiego niewidomego od urodzenia muzyka, śpiewającego w swym języku Yolngu. Jego sławę umocniły dwie nagrody muzyczne ARIA. W zeszłym roku został Australijczykiem Roku Terytorium Północnego.
Guy Maestri, dzisiejszy zwycięzca Archibald Prize urodził się w 1974 roku w Mudgee w NPW. 5 lat temu ukończył z wyróżnieniem malarstwo w National Art School, Darlinghurst. Artysta był finalistą Dobell Drawing Prize w 2007 i 2008 roku.

Guy Maestri: Goffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Archibald Prize 09 winner

W czasie dzisiejszego oglaszania werdyktu jury, zostały wymienione nazwiska pięciu ścisłych finalistów, wśród nich Vincenta Fantauuzzo, ktory zgłosił na konkurs portret Brandona Waltersa - półaborygeńskiego chłopca, który zagrał dziecięcą rolę w najnowszym epickim filmie „Australia”. Jego portret wzbudza duże zainteresowanie, tak więc Vincent ma dużą szansę zostac zwycięzca nagrody publiczności Archibalda, która będzie ogloszona 14 maja. Tymczasem Fantauzzo otworzył wczoraj wystawę swoich obrazów w Boutwell Draper Gallery w Redfern.

Sydney invention: Cuprocking Art

Jeśli gdziekolwiek na płotach siatkowych widziałeś kolorowe figury geometryczne utworzone z pozatykanych w otworach siatki kubkami plasikowymi, bylo to dzieło Andy Uprocka. Mogłes to zobaczy w Barcelonie, Paryżu, Londynie, Tokio czy Kuala Lumpur. Ale najczęściej w Sydney. Andy , 26-letni sydnejski artysta samouk swoją unikalną technikę kreowania sztuki nazwał cuprocking. W grudniu w Redfern można było zobaczyc jego Planetę X (Nibiru) , ktora ma zbliżyc się do Ziemi w 2012 roku. W styczniu na Flinders St, Surry Hills Andy umieścil cuprockingowy slogan: Free Gaza okreslając swoj artystyczny protest w ten sposób, że skoro nie ma tego na pierwszych stronach gazet niech bedzie na frontowej stronie ulic.
Ale jego dzieła nie sa trwałe. Przeżyją najwyżej kilka miesięcy. Plastikowy kubek rozpada się pod wpływem atmosfery. Bo jak mówi Andy: „ LIFE IS IMPERMANENT AND NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, LIKE A CUP IN A FANCE”
Uprock jest wszechstronny. Oprócz unikalnej techniki cuprocking maluje, rzeźbi, tworzy wyroby jubilerskie, uprawia breakdancing. Zaangażowany jest też w pomoc dzieciom ulicy ucząc ich tańca i prowadząc warsztaty artystyczne.




W czwartek w Palmer Project Gallery na Darlinghurst otwarto wystawe jego prac zatytuowaną „ Journey Trought Palettes”.

W piątek specjalnie dla The Sydney Pulse Andy Uprock utworzyl nowa instalację cuprocking w małej uliczce Arnold Pl nieopodal jego pracowni na Paddingtonie.

The Queen Mary 2 in Sydney Harbour

The famous ocean liner Queen Mary 2 arrives at Sydney Harbour just after 5.30am yesterday.

She was in the harbour city for less than 24 hours. Today, 1am she left Sydney for Tokyo.


The Queen Mary 2 is two thirds the length of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The ship's engines produces enough thrust to launch a jumbo jet and can reach a top speed of 30 knots.

- It has 1072 deck chairs, 2000 bathrooms, 3000 telephones and 5000 stairs
- It weighs 150,000 tonnes and is 345 metres long
- The Queen Mary 2 is the largest passenger ship to ever visit Australia, it is more than double the size of the Queen Elizabeth 2 and more than three times the size of the Titanic
- It is 34 metres longer than the original Queen Mary
- It cost an estimated $800 million dollars to build.

Town Hall: Women in Black

Women in Black was started in 1988 by Israeli women, standing each Thursday in the heart of Tel Aviv and calling on their government to end its occupation of Palestinian lands. The womenstand in silend vigil, holding posters that state their aim and wearing black, the traditional colour of mourning.
The movement has spread to 122 countris.
The Sydney WiB stand in silent vigil on steps of the Sydney Town Hall every Thursday evening, calling for peace and justice for the Palestinian people.

Aussie Pavlova & Mardi Gras

In 1935, the chef of the Hotel Esplanade in Perth, Western Australia, Herbert Sachse, created the pavlova to celebrate the visit of the great Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova. Whilst it has been suggested this dessert was created in New Zealand, it has become recognized as a popular Australian dish. Good dessert on the last day of the carnival (Mardi Gras).


Pavlova na ostatni dzień karnawału. Niewielu jednak w Australii wie, że to własnie dzisiaj jest Mardi Gras (fr. tłusty wtorek) czyli koniec karnawału.

Bondi Beach: Bowl-a-rama

Bondi Beach Skate Park, Saturday 21 February: fifth annual Bowl-a-rama. This competition is part of a week-long skateboarding festival with art shows, video premieres and live music. It is the biggest concrete event in the Southern Hemisphere. More that 40 of the world's top boarders participated in this festival.

W tamtejszym Kościele Sw.Wincentego znajduje się niezwykły fresk z fragmentem tekstu, który polski papież wyglosil w Alice Springs do rdzennej ludności Australii w 1986 roku. Byl to historyczny moment dla Aborygenów. Dla nich te slowa mają takie znaczenie jak dla Polaków homilia Jana Pawla II z czerwca 1989 roku na Placu Zwycięstwa w Warszawie: " Niech wstąpi Duch Twój i odnowi oblicze ziemi, tej ziemi".

Redfern

Redfern is an inner-city suburb of Sydney located 3 kilometres south of the CBD.The suburb is named after surgeon William Redfern, who was granted 100 acres (0.40 km2) of land in this area in 1817 by governor Lachlan Macquarie.

According to the 2006 census, Redfern has a population of 11,482 people, with indigenous people making up 2.4% of the population. 35% of the population was born overseas. 55.9% of the population only spoke English at home, with the most important other languages being Chinese languages (5.5%), Russian (2.4%), Greek (2.4%) and Arabic (1.7%). 25.0% of the population identified with no religion/atheism, higher than the national average. Of the remainder, 19.9% were Catholic, 10.9% Anglican, 4.4% Eastern Orthodox, and 3.9% Buddhist. Furthermore, 41.6% of the population lived in public housing.

'The Block' is an Aboriginal community area in the immediate vicinity of Redfern station.
