Australian major telecommunication operator Telstra has removed some of their payphones, believing them less necessary than in the past. They do not make a profit, because they are used less often and are frequently graffitied, vandalised, smashed and deliberately have their coin slots jammed.

Australia Day czyli"Dzień Australii", znany także jako Anniversary Day i Foundation Day to święto państwowe Australii obchodzone dzisiaj, 26 stycznia. Upamiętnia założenie przez kapitana Arthura Phillipa (późniejszego Gubernatora Australii) pierwszej stałej osady na tym kontynencie - kolonii karnej przy Port Jackson.Dzis Australijczycy celebrowali ten dzień w parkach a przede wszystkim nad zatoką Port Jackson, gdzie odbyla sie parada wszystkiego co plyw wlącznie z replikami historycznych żaglowców.


W 1888 roku Australia Day był świętowany po raz pierwszy we wszystkich stanach poza Adelajdą. W 1935 roku po raz pierwszy był świętowany w całej Australii.

Cronulla is a beachside suburb and is located 26 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD.
Cronulla is a popular tourist attraction and attracts many beachgoers from all over Sydney. Cronulla Beach features a long stretch of sand that runs from Boat Harbour to North Cronulla, followed by rock pools and another sandy beach at South Cronulla. The beaches of Cronulla from north to south are: Boat Harbour, Wanda Beach, Elouera Beach, North Cronulla Beach, Cronulla Beach, Blackwoods Beach, Shelly Beach and Oak Park.The beaches are perfect recreational areas for swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, bodysurfing and other water sports.

Cronulla is derived from kurranulla, meaning ‘‘place of the pink seashells’’ in the dialect of the area's Aboriginal inhabitants.
Surfing plays a major role in Cronulla. Famous professional surfer and 1999 world champion Mark Occhilupo grew up surfing in Cronulla.



Cronulla is part of Sutherland Shire. This suburb has a smaller proportion of overseas-born residents and less diversity in the range of countries of birth, relative to other parts of Sydney. About 80% of Sutherland Shire residents are born in Australia, followed by those born in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and South Africa. The percentage of residents claiming Australian ancestry is among the highest in Sydney.



















History: Cronulla Riots

In December 2005, violent incidents occurred on Cronulla Beach, culminating in a gang bashing of a White Australian lifeguard by Lebanese Australian Youth, and subsequent gang bashing of another White Australian 3 days later at Cronulla. An anonymous message was sent out by SMS, that was publicised by all major media outlets in Australia, that everyone should gather at Cronulla beach on the following Sunday and attack "wogs and lebs". In the days that followed, a series of riots and counter riots broke out in Cronulla and other beach side suburbs in Sydney's east which saw numerous assaults and gang bashings. There was only minor property damage, and one non fatal stabbing, although there were many people arrested and extensive national and international media interest.

Sydney Chinese New Year Festival

Wczoraj rozpoczął się w Sydney ponad trzy tygodniowy festiwal celebrujacy chiński Nowy Rok, który wg kalendarza księżycowego ma przebiec pod znakiem woła ( ox).Wół to wykastrowany samiec bydła domowego z rodziny parzystokopytnych, przeznaczony do tuczu lub do prac polowych w zaprzęgu. Woły zazwyczaj są silne, aczkolwiek mało agresywne i powolne. Stąd okresla się ludzi urodzonych w roku tego znaku, że są cierpliwi i silni fizycznie.


Celebracje festiwalowe rozpoczęly sie wczoraj w Belmore Park przy Central Station z udzialem premiera NSW Nathana Reesa i burmistrza Sydney Clover Moore.
Po parku biegal z tańczącymi dookola niego pierożkami (dancing dumplings) "kuchenny bożek" , sprawdzając ogromnymi paleczkami czy wszyscy biesiadnicy przestrzegają odpowiedniej diety.

Obecnym premierem stanu Nowa Poludniowa Walia jest 41 letni Nathan Rees.Z zawodu anglista. Po rezygnacji Morrisa Iemmy z funkcji premiera Nowej Południowej Walii na początku września 2008, został jednogłośnie wybrany na nowego lidera frakcji ALP (Australijska Partia Pracy) w parlamencie stanowym, co automatycznie oznaczało objęcie urzędu premiera stanu. Jednocześnie piastuje urząd ministra ds. sztuki.
Prywatnie formalnie pozostaje kawalerem, choć od lat żyje w nieformalnym związku. Swoją partnerkę poznał jeszcze w szkole średniej, mając zaledwie 14 lat. Deklaruje się jako katolik.

Burmistrzem Sydney jest już drugą kadencję Clover Moore, pierwsza kobieta na tym stanowisku. Studiowala w katolickim Loreto Kirribilli Collage i na Sydney University. Po ukonczeniu studiów na 5 lat z mężem, architektem preprowadzila się do Londynu. Po powrocie do Australii zamieszkala w ubogiej aborygenskiej dzielnicy Redfern. Przyczynila sie do zmiany wizerunku tej dzielnicy. Utworzyla wlasną partię: the Clover Moore Independent Team. Jej decyzje wzbudzają w miescie ogromne kontrowersje, choc Moore probuje rozruszac największą australijską metropolię popierajac organizację różnorodnych festiwali.
